Most people hid from the January 2026 North American Winter Storm.
Not Johnny here at NBD Adventures.
While the Northeast stocked up on bread and batteries, my girlfriend and I pointed the car toward Stowe, Vermont. Chasing fresh powder in what was being called one of the most dangerous snowstorms in recent memory.
The real question: was it worth battling an impending blizzard for a ski weekend? And more importantly — is Stowe truly the top ski destination in the Northeast?
The Journey to Stowe, VT

Coming from Long Island, Stowe is about as far as you can reasonably drive for a ski weekend. But with that long haul comes the reward of some of the best conditions in Vermont, especially when a major snowstorm is rolling in.
With the impending storm set to hit Sunday, we decided to leave late Saturday night… directly after my grandpa’s birthday dinner. Because nothing says “relaxing six-hour drive” like hitting the road at 9pm fueled by leftover cake and my girlfriend being tipsy on espresso martinis.
Instead of driving the full way to Stowe, we burned one of my free Marriott reward nights in Lebanon, New Hampshire ( one of the few perks of being loyal to a credit card company). By midnight, the “scenic Vermont drive” everyone raves about looked like absolute darkness. Just us, the highway, and eyelids heavier than DJ Khaled in a rainstorm.
We rolled into the Residence Inn around 2:15am, grateful the front desk checked us in quickly because we were seconds away from sleeping in the lobby. The plan? Sleep until 8:30am and cruise the final hour to Stowe before the snow hit.
At 3:10am, the fire alarm went off.
If there were ever a real emergency like the Titanic, my girlfriend and I would absolutely be the couple calmly listening to the orchestra while everyone else evacuates. We moved at a glacial pace. Luckily, I grabbed the car keys — which turned out to be clutch because it was single digits outside. Instead of freezing in pajamas in the parking lot, we hid in my truck for 45 minutes until we were cleared to go back inside.
We fell asleep again… only to be woken up by the fire alarm at 8:30am.
And then again.
Apparently, the extreme cold was freezing the fire suppression pipes, triggering the system over and over. At that point I wasn’t sure if we were in a hotel or part of an elaborate sleep deprivation experiment.
Eventually, we gave up on rest, grabbed gas, did some grocery shopping, and took advantage of the free breakfast, which was interrupted by yet another alarm. Marriott did refund my reward night, which felt like the only victory of the morning.
By 11am, we were finally back on the road toward Stowe. And in daylight, the drive actually lived up to the hype, snow-covered mountains, that quiet Vermont haze, and the kind of scenery that makes you forget you slept three total hours.
We even stopped at the Ben & Jerry’s factory on the way up, because if you’re going to be exhausted, you might as well be exhausted with ice cream.

Staying at Talta Lodge: Cozy, Convenient, and Underrated
Traditionally, I’m an Airbnb kind of guy. For big groups, it’s perfect, everyone can hang out and swap stories from the day. But since it was just my girlfriend and me, we decided to try a hotel. And honestly? Talta Lodge exceeded every expectation.
We booked three nights at Talta Lodge in Stowe, VT via Expedia, a boutique hotel inspired by European design. Our room was actually a standalone stuga: basically a tiny home all to ourselves. It had a living room, kitchen, bathroom, and a separate bedroom, perfect for couples. There was even a walk-out balcony, which we would have loved to use… if it weren’t buried under 26 inches of snow in 48 hours.
I was nervous about the first morning. Snowed in? My mind pictured hours of digging just to escape. Luckily, by 9am, Talta had someone clearing our walkway. I went out to meet him halfway, and the snow was light, fluffy, and completely worth the effort, I couldn’t wait to hit the mountain and come back to all the lodge had to offer.
Even for non-skiers, Talta Lodge keeps things interesting. The cozy lobby has a fireplace, local games, and even beer on tap, perfect for relaxing after a day on the slopes. For more active recovery, there’s a sauna, indoor pool, and an outdoor hot tub. One afternoon, we braved the snow and stepped into the hot tub as flakes fell all around us, a surreal experience I’ll never forget.

If you’re looking for a Stowe stay that’s cozy, convenient, and a little magical, Talta Lodge is hard to beat. You can book it through Expedia here for your next trip.
Skiing at Stowe Mountain Resort

Now, onto the stuff you came for: skiing. Was Stowe as good as advertised? I had high expectations from everyone who recommended it — and it absolutely exceeded them. Sure, 26 inches of fresh powder helped, but Stowe is now officially my favorite mountain in the Northeast.
After digging ourselves out of the hotel, we finally arrived around 10am, a little late for a weekend. Parking is Stowe’s biggest challenge, so we were directed to the cross-country ski lot. Luckily, free shuttles run to both Spruce Peak Lodge and the base of Mount Mansfield. We hopped off at Spruce Peak and started the day on some green runs to warm up. TIP: Just arrive before 8:30am on weekends and you’ll be in the clear.
What I love about Stowe is how it accommodates all levels of skiers. My girlfriend and I are at different skill levels, and yet both of us had an amazing time. I spent most of the morning skiing greens with her and still enjoyed every turn, the short lift lines and near 100% open mountain thanks to the fresh snow made it even better. Snow was so fluffy it felt like skiing on powdered sugar. At one point on the mountain, while snowboarding, I couldn’t see my board. The snow was up to my knees and I felt like I was going to be sucked into the mountain. I was like “damn, so this is hwere Yetis come from.
Later, I made it up to the peak of Mount Mansfield. The view was breathtaking: snow softly falling, wide-open trails, and that crisp mountain air. I tried to follow a local into the woods after lunch… and quickly realized I was not mentally prepared. Crashing through trees and gliding over hidden streams was exhilarating, but also terrifying. Definitely impressive in retrospect, but scary in the moment. Lesson learned: don’t blindly follow a local off-piste. MAJOR LESSON: DON’T FOLLOW STRANGERS INTO THE WOODS OR WHITE VANS THAT SAY “FRESH POWDER”

Day two was far more relaxed. I spent the day helping my girlfriend build confidence on blue trails. By the end of the day, she was carving turns like a pro — and I only survived two breakup threats along the way. The gradual difficulty progression at Stowe makes it perfect for mixed-skill groups: you can find blues closer to greens or near black diamonds, depending on your comfort level.
Après-ski at Stowe is just as fun. We checked out Whistlepig, located in Spruce Peak Lodge, for drinks inspired by Whistlepig Bourbon. Later, we grabbed more drinks at the lodge bar, watching skiers triumph and occasionally collapse on the slopes. It’s the perfect way to unwind after a day of shredding.
Wrapping Up Our Stowe Adventure

After a whirlwind weekend of snowy chaos, cozy lodge vibes, and more skiing than we thought possible, it’s safe to say Stowe did not disappoint. From the fire-alarm-filled night in Lebanon to the serene, snowy drives, and finally to Talta Lodge’s cozy stuga, every step of the journey had its own adventure.
The skiing alone was worth the trip, fresh powder, epic views from Mount Mansfield, and trails for every skill level made it easy to see why Stowe is consistently ranked among the Northeast’s top mountains. But it wasn’t just about the slopes. Talta Lodge gave us a relaxing home base with incredible amenities, and even for non-skiers, there was plenty to do, from the hot tub in falling snow to fireside drinks in the lobby. The only amenities that wasn’t included was back massages for recovery from my girlfriend after a day of skiing (that was a beer or two extra).
At the end of the weekend, it was the combination of adventure, comfort, and a touch of chaos that made the trip unforgettable. It was one of the best skiing trips I’ve personally ever done. The town itself was so beautiful, I’m saving that for another blog. Whether you’re chasing powder, exploring the town, or just escaping the city for a few days, Stowe has something for everyone, and it’s now officially at the top of my list for Northeast getaways.

So, if you’re thinking about heading up for a ski weekend (or even just a snowy escape), pack your gear, embrace the adventure, and maybe, just maybe, keep your car keys close when staying in a hotel.
